7 February 2026 Today begins the third deep freeze of the winter here in New England. Right now (9pm eastern time) it’s -6º (-21º c) with a wind chill of -20º (-29º c). I didn’t used to mind these kinds of deep freeze days - but - I didn’t have a dog then.
1 February 2026 This evening on our after dinner walk, the full moon shone down from an inky black sky, gently illuminating the snow on fields and mountains. We started a small herd of deer but they know by now that the dog is on a leash so instead of leaping away, they trotted at their leisure, occasionally glancing back to see if we were following. The air was bitter cold and we were happy to return to the warmth of our home.
